1. Entering a Restaurant: The Initial Greeting
When entering a restaurant, you'll often be greeted with “いらっしゃいませ” (Irasshaimase - Welcome). Respond with a nod and a smile, acknowledging the staff's greeting.
Phrase to know: 二人です (Futari desu) - Table for two, please. Pronunciation: foo-tah-ree dess
2. Ordering Food: Navigating the Menu
Japanese menus can range from pictures to written descriptions. If you’re unsure, it’s polite to ask for recommendations.
Phrase to know: おすすめは何ですか? (Osusume wa nan desu ka?) - What do you recommend? Pronunciation: oh-soo-soo-meh wah nahn dess kah?
3. Before Eating: Expressing Gratitude
It's customary to say “いただきます” (Itadakimasu - I gratefully receive) before starting to eat. This phrase shows appreciation for the meal.

4. Using Chopsticks:
Never stick chopsticks upright in rice, as this resembles a funeral ritual.
